Kurri Kurri Community Men’s Shed officially opened in May 2012 and was funded by the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation.
It currently has more than 50 members who work on various projects throughout the community. The shed is designed to forge community partnerships and provide retired and other local men with the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the community.
The modern Men’s Shed is an updated version of the ‘shed in the backyard’ that has long been part of Australian culture. With over 720 established across Australia, Men’s Sheds allow men to give back to the community while making friends and working on a project of their choice.
Men’s Sheds are also recognised as providing a forum that fosters men’s health, generates discussion and shares information. Many participants have a wealth of knowledge and experience they are more than willing to share.
The Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) is the peak body behind the Men’s Shed movement. It recognises a Men’s Shed as any community-based, non-profit, non-commercial organisation that is accessible to all men. It adds that a shed’s primary activity is the provision of a safe, friendly and healing environment where men are able to work on meaningful projects at their own pace, in their own time, and in the company of other men. The Kurri Men’s Shed has a store at the monthly markets held in the Kurri Kurri rotary park on the second Saturday of every month from 8am. We sell an array of handcrafted products that are all made at the Men’s Shed. Proceeds from every sale are all reinvested into the Men’s Shed and help pay for running costs, tools and supplies.
Anyone is welcome to join Kurri Kurri Men’s shed, whether they want to come along for a cup of tea, meet other people or help out with a project. There are no age restrictions, and the amount of time given is entirely up to the participant’s schedule and availability.
Kurri Kurri Men’s Shed is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:30am.
Membership for Kurri Kurri Men’s Shed costs $20. Members of the community interested in joining are welcome to visit the Men’s Shed during open hours where a membership form can be completed.
